Mel Rockhill update

Some of you have been wondering about Pastor Bob's dad, Mel Rockhill, who is an elder in our church and has taught classes in the past at Grace Christian. Dad was found to have fluid around his heart. After rushing him to the hospital, he was admitted to St. Judes in Fullerton, where Connie Rockhill works. About 2 quarts of fluid was drained from around his heart. He is feeling well and should be coming home soon. Thank you all for your prayers and concern.
Field Trip Plans

As of Tuesday, it appears we will switch the Pumpkin Patch field trip to Friday. Weatherman says it will rain on Friday. We figure the ground will be somewhat dry by Friday. The children are disappointed we have to postpone the trip, but I suppose they'll learn a bit about life from this as they do each day. Thanks for understanding.

As you know, we are planning to take the children to the Pumpkin patch on Wednesday. However, if it is raining, we will postpone the trip to when the weather improves.

Grace Christian will be having its first field trip for the elementary classes, K-6, this coming Wednesday. The children will be going to the Pumpkin Patch in Norwalk. The cost is $6.50 per student. Please send cash. For the cost the students will get entrance to the park, a free small pumpkin, food to feed the animals at the petting zoo, free entrance to the Petting Zoo, 6 tickets for rides and refreshments.

The children will be leaving the school at 10:00 a.m. and be returning to the school at 12:00 noon. Students are to wear their school uniforms.

Extra Credit

Elementary, Jr. High, and High School students were given an extra credit assignment. If they choose to do it, they can receive up to 10% of extra credit on a unit history test. They were each given a page of instructions. They should NOT try to write the answers on the page I gave them. It is too small.

Our effort in this assgnment is to stimulate critical thinking skills. It is fine with me if children and parents wish to discuss the Presidential they are to watch tonight before the student writes the report. We just ask that all the work be the student's original work, even if it reflects what was discussed in the family.

Thank you,

Pastor Bob

Dear Parents,

Remember that the fundraiser orders are due on Friday. Please have your order sheet filled in completely along with the checks from those who ordered. If you can't get it in by Friday, Monday is the absolutely last day for your child to get credit.

Thanks,

Pastor Bob

I just read that 25% of teachers in Washington DC send their own children to private schools. In my years as a teacher, I've noticed that the majority of teachers seemed to send their own children to private schools. I think that is a very interesting observation.

Don't forget there is no school on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 20, 21. The staff will be at a Teacher's Professional Growth Seminar for 2 days. We will provide day care for those who need it.

We need to make an adjustment to our Yearly Calendar we handed out at the Parent's Meeting. There is a mistake concerning the Professional Growth Seminar our teachers need to attend next week. We had the dates as September 21 and 22. It should read September 20 and 21. You'll find this on the School Menu as well. The school will be closed on this coming Monday and Tuesday. The lunch on the 20th, Chicken Nuggets, will be prepared for Wednesday, instead of Monday.

Parents,

Don't forget that Tuesday is Picture Day. A variety of packages are offered. Pick the one that suits you best. If you do not want to order pictures, we still need to take one of your child for our records. Please send students in uniform for their class photo. They can wear something nicer for their individual photos.

If you weren't at the meeting, here's a recap:

1. School T-shirts are now available. We have already put in the order, so we can't do another order until we have 24 more units. T-shirts are red or white with the new school logo on them. T-shirts are $7.00 for Youth S,M,L and Adult S,M, L.
XL, XX, XXX are $3.00 more.

Crew neck fleece in Red or white, same sizes are $15.00. $3.00 more for XL, XX, XXX.

Hooded Fleece Jackets are available for $21.00. They are same sizes and colors and come either with or without a zipper.

2. I forgot to mention that each student needs to bring their own set of Headphones. I found them at Office Max for under $7.00 with a 7' cable.

3. No Cell Phones at school, period.

4. No CD Players at school, period.

5. No game boys or other game equipment or electronical devices until after school.

6. Wednesday, Sept. 8 will be an orientation day. Students will probably not be on the computer that day, but will do some book work. We will need to interview students for electives and that will have to be added to the computer program.

7. If it is warm, we may have a swim party on Friday to help the new students get to know the continuing students better. Details will follow.

8. Each student should bring one family sized Kleenex tissue box to share with class.

9. If you didn't pay for your curriculum by August 23, it may be late. That was our deadline. No books are ordered until paid for.

10. If you have any questions, please email Pastor Bob here or simply respond on the GraceBlog and I will be notified by email.

Please remember that you will be given an opportunity at the Parent's meeting to order T-shirts with a new Grace Christian Logo on them. The T-shirts will be only $7.00 for a red or white one.

I spoke yesterday with the company making them and you can also order, at the same time, sweat shirts in the same colors. Some of our children are always cold and others are always hot, so this gives you some flexibility. These will be $10.00 and they are the crew type, pull over. There are many other options. I hope to have them at the Parent meeting. Perhaps some students would like fleece jackets with hoods, for example. They can be purchased. The important thing to remember, however, is that I have to order them in lots of 50. So, you should be thinking for the whole school year, because if you want more shirts later, they are likely to cost you much more unless we get another order in for 50. There will be examples of T-shirts and crew neck Fleece for you to see when you come.

If you have further ideas for school clothing we might order, let me know.

We are excited to announce a new addition to our electives this year at Grace. We will be adding a new Spanish class that I believe our students will really like. There will be one class for grades 1-6 and another for grades 7-12. These classes are very different from the computerized AOP Spanish classes that some of the students have taken. They are very traditional and grammar based, but also very difficult if one does not have an aptitude for learning languages.

These classes will be book based. They will be included in your current curriculum fee. They are conversational Spanish that should be very easy for the students to grasp quickly. Pastor Bob will teach the classes. He has experimented with them with his two children, Elizabeth (5) and Zack (13). They both found the classes to be easy and fun. In fact, they didn't want to stop the lessons!

Because these classes are necessary for high school and Jr. High, we will make them mandatory. Each high school student needs 20 credits of language, drama or speech. For most students, they will need 15 credits of Spanish and 5 of Speech. We will discuss this more at the Parent's meeting on Aug. 27.
