I thought this would be interesting to share. Someone out there is trying to catch up with our school! :-)

MacDailyNews - News - Welcome Home: "4,500 Apple iBooks going to south Florida students

Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 03:00 PM EDT

'Within a few months, 4,500 Broward students -- some as young as 9 -- will be on the front lines of a technological revolution in the county's classrooms. Each student in the pilot project will be issued an Apple iBook computer,' Steve Harrison reports for The Miami Herald.

'The School Board has spent $5 million from its capital budget for the iBooks -- the first step toward putting a personal computer in the hands of every child in grades 3 to 12,' Harrison reports. 'School officials caution they're still working on details of what's called one-to-one computing, which is planned for Monarch High in Coconut Creek, Miramar High, Attucks Middle in Hollywood and Broward Estates Elementary in Fort Lauderdale.'

MacDailyNews Take: More lucky students getting work done with their computers, instead of always having their computers worked on, is always good news."

Parents often ask what they should send with their children in regards to supplies.

I. Students should have a back pack. It helps a lot.

II. Students should bring a supply of pencils (1 for each day of the year. They lose one a day it seems.) lined paper, eraser, ruler, King James Bible, colored pencils or markers and they should have a book to read (novel) for their book reports.

III. A pocket dictionary is a good thing to bring.

IV. Lunch/snack money as needed.

New Uniform Requirements for September 8, 2004.

This coming year students may wear as uniforms the following:

Blue OR black pants. Pants must fit. Belts should be worn. No sagging, no hip huggers. Must come up to waist. Not too tight, not too baggy.

Polo Shirts may be Red or White. Must cover the tummy completely. For hot weather we will be offering some Grace Christian T-Shirts. They will have the school logo on them. We will announce the cost here as soon as we know. They won't be very expensive. They are the only T-shirts that can be worn at school.

Many students resorted to wearing jackets all day long so they weren't showing a uniform shirt. This is all right outside, but they need to wear the polo shirts in the classroom.

Tennis shoes are the only allowed shoes on campus except for medical reasons such as a broken toe that requires a sandal etc.

No denim, Levi type cloth for the pants. No faded looking jeans that are called "blue pants" by students. Pants must be navy blue pants, the same color as standard uniform pants sold in stores. But we do not require you to buy "Official" uniform pants, which are quite expensive.

Students who do not have a uniform, whether because it is dirty or destroyed, may not come to school. Please keep students home if they do not have a uniform. They will not be allowed in the classroom.

Feel free to throw a birthday party at our school!

All you have to do is ask. Several parents have opted to hold their child's birthday party at our school during lunch. This guarantees there will be children there! You can bring cup cakes, ice cream, a cake, cookies, a jumper, a clown, whatever you want. We just ask you do it around lunch time. Some parents bring lunch, such as pizza. Others wait until the children eat their regular lunch and then have a party.

We had a great time right before school let out at the San Gabriel Mission. Here the students are standing in front of the outside wall of the Mission entrance. It's strange to see a mission several hundred years old in the middle of a city.

Now that I have the capability, I'll start sharing pictures of the students with you. I'll try to spread it around the different age groups.

Grace News Update:

Lots of exciting things are happening at Grace! We are closing the enrollment for high school and elementary school at this time. Unless we can fit more computer in the classroom and hire an aide, we can't handle anymore students. We still have room in K-2.

There are a few people who have already come and tested. They will be able to come next year, but it doesn't look like we can handle many more. If you know of anyone wanting to come to Grace next year, get them to call this week.

Any parents of continuing students who have not pre-registered for next year are losing their places and will go on a waiting list. Not much I can do about that. If we have not had an indication that your child is returning, we must assume he/she is not returning and give the space to someone who wants to come. So, please, any parents wanting to send your child back next year, you need to contact the office manager, Tennie Rockhill, immediately.

I will send out one last notice by mail to those we have not heard from. We will have to buy several new computers simply to accommodate those new students.

I'll be putting up some new web pages as well. The current one will be removed soon. You will be notified when it is ready.
